For the past several months, director keef (represented for commercials by newnew Films – Canada) has been working on a short film series called Made by Hand. The series aims to document small, local businesses who focus on craft, examining what their work means to them and how they learn to do it well.

The project’s inaugural film is on the Breuckelen Distilling Company, the first gin distiller in Brooklyn since Prohibition. To celebrate its launch, Made by Hand debuted the film with a screening at Studiomates , the collaborative workspace in DUMBO, Brooklyn last Thursday Sept 8th.
We’re pleased now to release our first film into the world; go and watch it now.  thisismadebyhand.com/film/the_distiller

Brad Estabrooke’s tale is one of knowing you could fail, and moving ahead anyway — perhaps the most important ethos of the handmade spirit. We’re thankful to Brad for also joining us last night and sharing his gin and company.

Welcome D!GBY

March 7, 2011

D!gby is a LA based director who grew up in the United States, Turkey and Germany. He graduated high school in Frankfurt Germany and immediately landed a job working for Sony Music Germany illustrating album covers.

He met director Marcus Nispel on a shoot, who offered him an opportunity to move to LA to work as his assistant at MJZ and work closely with him on his commercial projects. Before branching off as a director himself, Digby collaborated with Marcus as a camera operator, DP and also co-directed a NHL campaign for the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Digby was able to experience the commercial process from inception through post and after years of learning and doing, he came across a spec creative brief that he decided to direct while freelancing at an agency. It ended up airing nationally and it was nominated for an AICP award for art direction.

Today, Digby is enjoying his craft and is excited for what the future holds. When distilled, my creativity is grounded in art, competition, fashion, photography and design.
